I asked three friends of mine to define creative writing, They all had different ideas on what the term meant.
Kim:
"Creative writing is writing about whatever the **** someone wants to write about. like it's writing for the simple purpose of writing to enjoy it."
Mitchell:
"I guess I would say any writing that displays any literative thinking or deliberate mental merit. Writing that means something, and not just says something."
Avery:
"I would say it's writing for yourself. It's not to help or benefit anyone but yourself, it's to make the thing in your head tangible."
My definition of creative writing is most similar to Mitchell's response. Creative writing is writing that has meaning behind it. A factual document such as a text book would not be considered creative writing, because it has no creativity behind it. Like how a diagram of the esophagus would not be considered art, because it is purely educational. Creative writing has energy, it has emotion. It is poetry and fiction, children's books and romance novels. Creative writing is writing with meaning.
